Most vulnerable
- Poured concrete steps and slabs
- Lower-grade concrete pavers
- Anything already scaled
- Surfaces that stay wet

Salt is the second-biggest cause of surface damage in Ontario after base failure. It is also the one you have direct control over, which makes it worth two minutes of reading.
What it does
De-icers work by lowering the freezing point, which means the surface goes through more freeze-thaw cycles per winter rather than fewer. Each cycle stresses the top few millimetres, and over years that shows as scaling — the surface flaking away.
Repair
The advantage of a modular surface.
One slab means one repair option.
Questions
Harder on concrete than on quality pavers, but not harmless to either. Salt drives freeze-thaw cycling at the surface, which causes scaling — the surface flaking away. Cheaper units and poured concrete show it first.
Sand for grip, and only as much de-icer as you actually need. Where you do use it, rinsing the surface in early spring removes what is left before it sits through the wet season.
It helps at the surface, and it is a commitment — once sealed it needs redoing periodically. It does not protect a surface whose real problem is the base.
Resurfacing is possible and rarely invisible. Where the scaling is deep or widespread, replacing the steps — often in precast or natural stone — lasts longer and looks better than patching.
