Plate compactor being run across the bedding course

Retaining walls, steps and porches.

FOUR40 builds segmental block and armour stone retaining walls, precast and natural stone steps, and porch landings across the GTA — with the base, backfill and drainage that keep them standing. Free on-site estimates.

What's included

The blocks are the cheap part.

Nearly every failed retaining wall in Ontario failed for the same reason: water behind it with nowhere to go. The wall you can see is a facing; the work that matters is behind it.

Base and first course

  • Excavated below grade to a compacted footing
  • Granular base compacted in lifts
  • First course levelled in both directions
  • Buried course where the design requires it

A wall that is out of level on course one is out of level on course ten.

Behind the wall

  • Clear stone backfill
  • Drainage pipe to daylight
  • Geotextile separation
  • Compacted backfill in lifts
  • Grading above the wall directed away

This is the part a cheap quote leaves out.

Steps and landings

  • Precast and natural stone treads
  • Steps set into wall runs
  • Porch resurfacing
  • Railing posts set properly
  • Lighting rough-in

What it costs

What moves the number.

Typical range Ask for a figure

We publish real numbers rather than "it depends" — but only once they're ours to publish. Our written ranges are being finalised; call and we'll give you one over the phone in a minute. What moves the number:

  • Wall length and height — height drives everything, including whether it needs engineering
  • Block or stone selection
  • Access for machinery versus wheelbarrow work
  • How much excavation and disposal the grade change requires
  • Drainage runs and where the water is taken to
  • Steps, landings and railings tied into the same job

Working with us

Five steps, no surprises.

01

Site visit

We measure, check drainage and grade, and talk through what you actually want. Free, and no pressure to sign anything.

02

Written quote

Scope, materials, base depth and price in writing. You'll know exactly what's included before a shovel moves.

03

Schedule & locates

Ontario One Call locates booked, materials ordered, start date confirmed. A realistic window, not an optimistic one.

04

Build

Excavation, base, compaction, install. Site cleaned at the end of each day — you still have to live there.

05

Walkthrough

We walk it together before final payment. Anything on your list gets fixed, then we're back if settling shows up.

Questions

Walls and steps, answered.

Do retaining walls need engineering?

Above roughly a metre, usually yes, and municipalities differ. Below that, a segmental block wall built with proper base, backfill and drainage is normal construction. We will tell you which side of the line your wall sits on before quoting rather than after.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Water, almost always. A wall holds back soil, and soil holds water — without clear stone backfill and a drainage path behind it, hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall out. The visible blocks are the cheapest part of a wall; the drainage behind them is what keeps it standing.

Armour stone or block?

Armour stone suits larger grade changes and rural or naturalistic settings, and needs machine access. Segmental block gives a cleaner engineered look, is easier in tight backyards, and offers far more colour and texture choice. Both need the same base and drainage work.

Can steps be built into the wall?

Yes, and it is usually the better design. Precast or natural stone steps set into a wall run cost less than building the two separately and look considerably better than a set of steps landed in front of one.
