How long is the bathroom out of use?
A full tear-out and rebuild is typically two to three weeks, and the bathroom is unusable for nearly all of it. If it is your only bathroom, that is the constraint the whole schedule is built around, and it is worth saying so at the site visit.
Can I keep the layout and just replace the finishes?
Yes, and it is by far the cheaper job. Keeping the toilet, sink and tub where they are avoids moving drains, which is the single biggest cost jump in a bathroom. New tile, vanity, fixtures and paint in an unchanged layout is a strong result for a fraction of a re-plumb.
What is under the tile matters, doesn't it?
More than the tile. A shower is a waterproofing job with tile stuck to it — membrane, sloped mortar bed, properly detailed corners and curb. Tile laid over a failed or missing membrane looks identical on handover day and rots the floor beneath it over the following years. Ask any quote how the shower is waterproofed.
Who does the plumbing?
A licensed plumber — plumbing is a compulsory trade in Ontario. We handle demolition, framing, waterproofing, tile, drywall, paint, vanity and trim, and coordinate the plumber and electrician around that. You will know who is doing what before you sign.
Do I need a permit?
Not usually for a like-for-like refit. Moving plumbing, altering walls, or adding a bathroom where none existed generally does. We confirm before quoting.
