This is the part that matters and it is not optional. In Ontario, before demolition or renovation work an owner must have the building examined for designated substances — asbestos above all — and the findings given to every contractor bidding the work. Asbestos turns up in older drywall joint compound, vinyl floor tile and the mastic under it, pipe and duct insulation, and textured ceilings.
Any pre-1990 home is a candidate. The survey is inexpensive relative to what it prevents, and no reputable contractor should be swinging a hammer into an unsurveyed older interior. If a quote does not raise this, that tells you something about the quote.
