What's included

Awkward space is where custom pays.

In a plain rectangular closet a modular system is the sensible answer. Custom work earns its money where the space is irregular and a system would leave a third of it unused.

Closets

  • Walk-in and reach-in
  • Hanging, shelving and drawer mix
  • Islands where space allows
  • Doors, mirrors and lighting
  • Finished to match the room

Built-ins

  • Media walls and surrounds
  • Bookcases and alcove shelving
  • Under-stair storage
  • Mudroom benches and lockers
  • Window seats

Also

  • Feature and panelled walls
  • Fireplace surrounds
  • Wainscoting and trim detail

Same carpentry, different room.

What it costs

What moves the number.

Typical range Ask for a figure

We publish real numbers rather than "it depends" — but only once they're ours to publish. Our written ranges are being finalised; call and we'll give you one over the phone in a minute. What moves the number:

  • Linear footage and how many components
  • Custom build versus modular system
  • Material and finish — melamine, painted MDF, or hardwood
  • Drawers and internal hardware, which drive cost more than shelving
  • Doors, mirrors and integrated lighting
  • How irregular the space is

Questions

Questions, answered.

Custom built or modular?

Modular systems are cheaper and quicker and work well in a regular rectangular space. Custom built-ins earn their money in awkward spaces — under stairs, sloped ceilings, chimney breasts, odd alcoves — where a modular system leaves dead volume.

Do built-ins add value?

Storage does. Buyers respond to a house that feels organised, and a well-made built-in reads as quality rather than as furniture. The exception is anything so specific to your use that the next owner will pull it out.

How long does a walk-in take?

Typically three to five working days on site once the components are ready, plus lead time on materials and any doors.
