What's included

The prerequisite job nobody plans for.

Panel upgrades are rarely what someone set out to buy. They surface halfway through pricing an EV charger, a basement suite or an air conditioner — which is exactly why it is worth finding out early rather than mid-project.

Assessment

  • Load calculation on current and planned load
  • Panel condition, age and available spaces
  • Service size at the mast and meter
  • Grounding and bonding checked
  • Sub-panel priced as the cheaper alternative where it fits

The upgrade

  • 100 A or 200 A service
  • Mast, meter base and grounding as required
  • Circuits transferred and labelled properly
  • ESA notification and inspection
  • Utility disconnect and reconnect scheduled

Licensed Electrical Contractor throughout. We coordinate; they certify.

Making good

  • Wall openings patched and painted
  • Exterior penetrations sealed and capped
  • Finished basement surfaces repaired
  • Site left clean

An electrical quote usually stops at the panel. Ours does not.

What it costs

What moves the number.

Typical range Ask for a figure

We publish real numbers rather than "it depends" — but only once they're ours to publish. Our written ranges are being finalised; call and we'll give you one over the phone in a minute. What moves the number:

  • Existing service size and what it is going to
  • Whether the mast, meter base and grounding need replacing
  • How many circuits have to be transferred and re-identified
  • Utility coordination and any overhead-to-underground change
  • Whether a sub-panel would do the job instead
  • Drywall, paint and exterior repair afterwards

Questions

Questions, answered.

How do I know if I need one?

The usual triggers: a 60 A or 100 A service in a house that keeps adding load, a panel with no spare breaker spaces, a fuse box, aluminum branch wiring, or a specific new load — EV charger, hot tub, air conditioning, a basement suite, a workshop — that a load calculation says will not fit.

Panels of certain vintages and brands also come up on home inspections and in insurance questions. If a home inspector or your insurer has named yours, that is worth acting on rather than arguing with.

What's actually involved?

More coordination than people expect. A service upgrade means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, an ESA notification and inspection, and scheduling with your utility to disconnect and reconnect the service — Alectra, Toronto Hydro or Hydro One depending where you are. The mast, meter base and grounding often change with it. Power is off for a working day.

Can you just add a sub-panel instead?

Sometimes, and it is much cheaper when it works. A sub-panel solves 'no spare breaker spaces'. It does not solve 'not enough amperage coming from the street'. The load calculation tells you which problem you have, and it is worth knowing before you agree to the bigger job.

Do I need this for a legal basement apartment?

Very often, yes. A second unit brings its own kitchen, sometimes its own heating, and usually a requirement for separately-fed circuits. The electrical scope is one of the first things to price on a suite conversion, because it can move the whole budget.
