What's included

Half of this job is not electrical.

The charger and the circuit are an electrician's work. Getting power from the panel to where the car actually parks — through a wall, under a driveway, across a yard, and leaving no trace — is ours.

Before anything is quoted

  • Load calculation on the existing service
  • Panel capacity and breaker space checked
  • Charger position set by where the car parks
  • Cable length and conduit route planned
  • Energy management option priced against a service upgrade

This step is what stops an unnecessary panel upgrade.

The install

  • Dedicated circuit by a Licensed Electrical Contractor
  • ESA notification under their licence
  • Core drilling and conduit, indoor or outdoor rated
  • Wall-mount or pedestal at the parking spot
  • Trenching and sleeving where the run crosses outside

Putting it back

  • Interlock lifted, re-bedded and relaid
  • Concrete cut and patched to match
  • Sod and soft landscaping restored
  • Interior finishes repaired and painted

The part most electrical quotes leave to 'the homeowner'.

What it costs

What moves the number.

Typical range Ask for a figure

We publish real numbers rather than "it depends" — but only once they're ours to publish. Our written ranges are being finalised; call and we'll give you one over the phone in a minute. What moves the number:

  • Distance from the panel to the charger, and what the run passes through
  • Whether the existing service has capacity, or needs management or an upgrade
  • Indoor wall mount versus an outdoor pedestal
  • Trenching, and what surface has to be opened and restored
  • Charger unit — supplied by you or by us
  • Permit and ESA fees

Questions

Questions, answered.

Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?

Often, but less often than people are told. A Level 2 charger typically wants a dedicated 40 A circuit, and whether your service can carry it comes down to a load calculation, not a guess. A 100 A service in a house with electric heat or a hot tub is usually full; the same service in a gas-heated house frequently has room.

Where it is tight, an energy management system can let the charger share capacity with other loads instead of forcing a service upgrade — cheaper than new wire from the street, and worth pricing before anyone sells you a panel.

Who is allowed to install it?

A Licensed Electrical Contractor, and the work is notified to the Electrical Safety Authority under their licence. That is not a formality — an uninspected charger circuit is the kind of thing an insurer asks about after a fire. We coordinate the electrician and handle the rest: core drilling, conduit runs, restoring finishes, and the hardscape if the run crosses a driveway.

Can the charger go on the outside wall or at the end of the driveway?

Yes to both, and the second one is where we are genuinely useful. A pedestal charger part-way down a driveway means a trench, conduit and reinstatement — and if that driveway is interlock, it means lifting, re-bedding and relaying pavers so the repair does not show. That is our trade, not an electrician's.

Should I do this at the same time as the driveway?

If a driveway is on the cards at all, yes — by a wide margin. Sleeving conduit while the base is open costs very little. Retrofitting the same run through a finished driveway means cutting it back open. Same logic as lighting and gate power: plan it with the hardscape.
